Improving Sanitation, Water quality and Agricultural productivity in the Upper Pangani Basin. Goal: The ultimate aim of this project is to sustainably intensify banana-based farming systems in the target region, based on documented nutrient budgets, fine-tuned integrated soil fertility interventions, capitalizing on fundamental understanding of nutrient-water use efficiency interactions. This will be achieved through training of NM-AIST students, carrying out their PhD research work within this context, in close cooperation with relevant stakeholders such as NGO’s (TRIAS, RECODA), Farmers Network in Arusha and Kilimanjaro Regions and public extension services.

Development of water purification technologies Goal: To develop water purification technologies for wastewater treatment with constructed wetlands and for defluoridation of community water supplies in Northern Tanzania. The project would like to ensure that people are informed of the potential of technology to solve water quality challenges, especially in Northern Tanzania. Therefore, P2 is planning to implement actions on Sanitation (through Constructed Wetland Technology) and Water purification (Defluoridation of Water supplies) by implementing technologies that are adapted to local contexts and that are sustainable. These actions are done through building capacities to future generations under PhD studentships.

Institutional Strengthening Goal: improving NM-AIST research and education quality through the use of big data, open data and artificial intelligence, all major trends in current and future scientific research. Technology Park Goal: To increase technology transfer to society and industry originating from Academic and R & D in the Northern Tanzania through enhanced industrial collaboration and creation of spin-offs. This is expected to be achieved through support on NM AIST’s Incubation Centre, Technology Transfer Office (TTO) and Commercialization Office. The PSU provides administrative and logistical support to the other IUC projects regarding implementation of activities in a defined channel. It continues to provide information to all stakeholders involved in the partner programme, such facts as to financial and technical issues of the partner programme. In the process of ensuring smooth administrative and logistical support PSU focuses in meeting the overall objectives which encompass both academic and developmental aspects.
